What Does the IgE Test Show?

IgE (immunoglobulin E) is an antibody your immune system makes when it reacts to an allergen. A high level of IgE to a specific allergen can show that your body is sensitive to it.

Total IgE vs specific IgE

  • Total IgE test: measures the overall amount of IgE in your blood. A high level can point to an allergic tendency, but it doesn’t say what you’re allergic to.
  • Specific IgE allergy panel: measures IgE to particular allergens, such as dust mites, pollen or foods. This helps find your individual triggers.

The test can help identify reactions to things like:

No single test finds every allergy. The doctor reads your results together with your symptoms and history. A positive result alone doesn’t always mean that thing causes your symptoms, which is why expert interpretation matters.

How the Test Is Done

  1. The doctor advises the test after your clinical assessment.
  2. A small blood sample is taken from your arm. It takes a few minutes.
  3. The sample is sent for testing.
  4. The doctor explains your results and builds your plan.

Preparation: Please don’t stop any medicine unless the doctor tells you to.

The doctor will choose the panel that fits your symptoms.
