Dry, itchy, red skin that flares again and again? Patches that crack, ooze or keep you up at night scratching? Skin allergies and dermatitis can affect how you feel every day. As a skin allergy doctor in Surat, Dr. Ashish Dungrani looks for the trigger behind your rash. With the right diagnosis and care, it can be managed, gently. Our goal is long-term relief and better control of your symptoms, not just a quick fix.

Takes about 2 minutes. Our team will call you back to confirm your visit.

What Is Skin Allergy (એલર્જી ખંજવાળ) and Dermatitis?

Dermatitis means swelling and irritation of the skin. When it’s linked to allergies, your immune system overreacts to something that touches your skin, something you eat, or something in the air.

There are two common types we see:

  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema): dry, itchy, rough patches that come and go. It often starts in childhood and is common in people who also have asthma or allergic rhinitis.
  • Contact dermatitis: a red, itchy rash where your skin has touched a trigger, such as a metal, a detergent or a cosmetic.

In Gujarati, many people simply call it એલર્જી ખંજવાળ (allergy itching).

Skin allergies are not contagious. They can come back again and again, so finding and managing the triggers is important. If your rash comes as raised welts that appear and fade, see our page on urticaria (hives).

Common Symptoms

Tick the ones that sound like you or your child:

  • Dry, rough or scaly skin
  • Strong itching, often worse at night
  • Red or darker patches
  • Small bumps that may ooze or crust
  • Cracked, thick or sore skin from scratching
  • Rash where skin touched a metal, soap, cosmetic or plant
  • Flare-ups with weather changes, sweat or stress

If your skin problem keeps coming back, disturbs your sleep, or isn’t getting better with creams, see a skin allergy specialist. If your rash looks infected, is spreading fast, or the doctor feels it isn’t allergic, we will advise you to see a skin specialist.

Common Triggers

Common triggers include:

  • Soaps and detergents: harsh soaps, washing powders and cleaning products
  • Cosmetics and fragrances: perfumes, hair dyes and some creams
  • Metals: nickel in jewellery, belt buckles and watch straps
  • Dust and pollen: airborne allergens can worsen eczema
  • Certain foods: in some people, especially children
  • Heat, sweat and dry weather: Surat’s heat and humidity, or dry winter air
  • Stress: can trigger or worsen flare-ups

How We Diagnose Skin Allergy and Dermatitis

Getting the diagnosis right is the first step to the right treatment.

  1. Clinical assessment. Dr. Dungrani asks about your symptoms, health history, how often they happen, what seems to set them off and how severe they are. We look closely at your skin, where the rash appears and what seems to start it.
  2. IgE blood test (if needed). A simple blood test that shows how your immune system reacts to specific allergens. It helps find your exact triggers. Read more about the IgE blood test.

A test is advised only when your symptoms are long-lasting or unclear. The doctor will explain what you need and why.

How We Treat Skin Allergy and Dermatitis

Our allergic dermatitis treatment and eczema allergy treatment aim to calm your skin and reduce how often it flares. Your plan may include:

  • Natural immunotherapy. Our signature non-steroidal treatment. It aims to gently re-train your immune system so it reacts less to your triggers over time, and to reduce your need for daily anti-allergy medicines. Read more about natural immunotherapy.
  • Homeopathic medicines. Gentle care that looks at your overall health. Suited to children and older adults, and does not cause drowsiness. Read about our homeopathic allergy treatment.
  • Diet and lifestyle guidance. Guidance on skin care, avoiding your triggers, and foods that may play a role.
  • Regular follow-up. We track your progress, adjust your plan and send WhatsApp reminders so you stay on track.

What to expect

Many patients start to see positive signs within 4–8 weeks, and a full course may take 6–12 months, our clinic says. We review your progress every couple of months and change the plan if a medicine isn’t working. Timelines vary from person to person.

Results vary from person to person.

Tips that may help at home

  • Moisturise daily: apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing
  • Bathe in lukewarm water: hot water dries out the skin
  • Choose mild products: fragrance-free soaps and detergents
  • Wear soft cotton clothes: avoid wool and tight synthetic fabrics
  • Keep nails short: to reduce damage from scratching, especially in children

Home care can ease discomfort, but it does not replace a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Skin Allergy and Dermatitis

Is eczema contagious?

No. Eczema and other skin allergies can’t spread from person to person.

Why does my skin get worse in summer or winter?

Heat and sweat can irritate the skin in summer. Dry air in winter can make skin crack and itch. Your plan will include tips for each season.

Will I have to use steroid creams forever?

Our main treatments, natural immunotherapy and homeopathic care, are non-steroidal. Please don’t stop any prescribed cream on your own. The doctor will guide any change. Results vary from person to person.

Can food cause skin allergies?

In some people, especially children, certain foods can trigger or worsen eczema. An IgE blood test can help when the doctor feels it’s needed. Learn more about food allergy.

Is it safe for my child?
