By Allergy Cure Clinic · Medically reviewed by Dr. Ashish Dungrani, M.D. (EH), BHMS, PGDEMS (Mumbai) – Consultant Homoeopathic Physician and Allergy Specialist

Please note: Results vary from person to person. Please don’t stop any prescribed medicine without talking to your doctor.

Sudden red, raised, itchy rashes that appear and disappear, and keep coming back? You may have urticaria, also called hives, or શીળસ (Shilas) in Gujarati. It’s uncomfortable and can be worrying, but with the right care it can be managed. Our urticaria treatment in Surat starts by finding what sets off your hives. Our goal is long-term relief and better control of your symptoms, not just a quick fix.

Takes about 2 minutes. Our team will call you back to confirm your visit.

What Is Urticaria (Hives / શીળસ)?

Urticaria is a skin reaction that causes red, itchy welts. They can be small spots or large patches. It is not contagious, so you can’t catch it from or give it to someone else.

Why it happens: when your body meets a trigger, your immune system releases a chemical called histamine. This makes tiny blood vessels leak fluid under your skin, which creates the raised, itchy rash (called a “wheal”).

The two main types

  • Acute urticaria (short-term): lasts less than 6 weeks. It is often caused by a reaction to a food, a medicine or an insect bite. Once the trigger is found, avoiding it usually helps prevent it from coming back.
  • Chronic urticaria (long-term): lasts more than 6 weeks. The cause can be harder to find, and it may be linked to the body’s own immune response. These cases need closer investigation.

Common Symptoms

Tick the ones that sound like you:

  • Red or skin-coloured raised welts (wheals)
  • Strong itching or burning
  • Rashes that change shape, move around or fade within hours, then return
  • Swelling of the lips, eyelids or face
  • Rashes after certain foods, medicines, heat, cold or pressure
  • Rashes that keep coming back for weeks or months

Know the warning signs of angioedema. Angioedema is deeper swelling under the skin. It often affects the eyelids, lips, tongue or throat, and can happen with hives.

Get emergency help right away if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or feel faint. Call 108 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Do not wait for a clinic appointment.

Common Triggers

Triggers vary hugely from person to person. Common ones we see include:

  • Foods: nuts, shellfish, eggs, strawberries, wheat products and food additives
  • Medicines: some antibiotics (such as penicillin) and painkillers (such as aspirin and ibuprofen)
  • Environment: extreme heat or cold, sunlight or sudden temperature changes
  • Infections: colds, viral infections or intestinal parasites
  • Physical triggers: pressure on the skin (tight clothes), scratching or insect bites
  • Stress: high stress can trigger or worsen flare-ups

In some chronic cases, no outside trigger is found and the cause lies in the body’s own immune response.

How We Diagnose Urticaria (Hives)

Getting the diagnosis right is the first step to the right treatment.

  1. Clinical assessment. Dr. Dungrani asks about your symptoms, health history, how often they happen, what seems to set them off and how severe they are. We also work out whether your urticaria is acute or chronic, because this shapes your plan.
  2. IgE blood test (if needed). A simple blood test that shows how your immune system reacts to specific allergens. It helps find your exact triggers. Read more about the IgE blood test.

A test is advised only when your symptoms are long-lasting or unclear. The doctor will explain what you need and why.

How We Treat Urticaria (Hives)

Whether you need hives treatment in Surat for a recent rash or chronic urticaria treatment for hives that keep coming back, your plan is built around your type of urticaria and your triggers. It may include:

  • Natural immunotherapy. Our signature non-steroidal treatment. It aims to gently re-train your immune system so it reacts less to your triggers over time, and to reduce your need for daily anti-allergy medicines. Read more about natural immunotherapy.
  • Homeopathic medicines. Gentle care that looks at your overall health. Suited to children and older adults, and does not cause drowsiness. Many people search for urticaria homeopathy treatment; read about our homeopathic allergy treatment.
  • Diet and lifestyle guidance. Help to avoid your triggers, and guidance on foods to limit during flare-ups.
  • Regular follow-up. We track your progress, adjust your plan and send WhatsApp reminders so you stay on track.

What to expect

Many patients start to see positive signs within 4–8 weeks, and a full course may take 6–12 months, our clinic says. We review your progress every couple of months and change the plan if a medicine isn’t working. Timelines vary from person to person.

Results vary from person to person.

Tips that may help at home

  • Avoid scratching: it makes the swelling and itching worse
  • Cool down: use a cool compress, take a lukewarm oatmeal bath or rest in a cool room, as heat can worsen the itch
  • Wear loose clothes: light, loose cotton clothes avoid pressure on the skin
  • Watch your diet during flare-ups: limit high-histamine foods like fermented items, processed meats, chocolate and strawberries
  • Use mild products: choose soaps and lotions made for sensitive skin

Home care can ease discomfort, but it does not replace a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Urticaria (Hives)

Is urticaria contagious?

No. You can’t catch hives from someone, and you can’t pass them on.

What is the difference between acute and chronic urticaria?

Acute urticaria lasts less than 6 weeks and is often linked to a food, medicine or insect bite. Chronic urticaria lasts more than 6 weeks and needs closer investigation.

What is શીળસ (Shilas)?

શીળસ (Shilas) is the common Gujarati word for urticaria, or hives. Shilas no ilaj (treatment) starts with finding your triggers.

Can food cause hives?

Yes. Foods like nuts, shellfish, eggs, strawberries, wheat and food additives are common triggers. An IgE blood test can help find food triggers when needed.

When should I see a doctor?

If your hives last more than a few days or keep coming back, see a doctor. If your rash is more dry, rough or patchy than raised welts, see our page on skin allergy and dermatitis. If you have swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing, call 108 or go to the nearest emergency department right away.
